REPORT
More than eighty volunteers of the Road Safety Society, Red Ribbon Society and Prashasnika, visited Children Traffic Park, Sector-23, Chandigarh on 21st January 2017and participated in “Safe Braking Contest”, an event of Chandigarh Traffic Police. They were accompanied by faculty members of Department of Public Administration. The initiative was for generating awareness on Road Safety through “Safe Braking” of vehicles.Mr. Rajiv Ambasta, Dy. SP, Traffic South, R&D, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
The students were educated about:
(i)    Riding gears (helmets, elbow-guard, knee-guard and gloves)
(ii)    Riding posture
(iii)    Progressive braking (importance of using both brakes in two-wheelers)
The studentswere guided about the proper use of brakes while driving, to ensure road safety. It was highlighted that most of the accidents are a result of inappropriate and untimely application of brakes. It was suggested that one should not panic while applying brakes, rather it should be done very carefully so that neither the vehicle skids nor it strikes others. It was also told that if one drives at high speed then also the brakes are more difficult to be applied.  This was followed by a practical demonstration and competition. The students were given two-wheelers and asked to ride in full safety-gear of helmet, arm guards, gloves and leg-guards. The traffic personnel put obstacles before them while driving to check their intelligence and presence of mind while braking. To spread awareness amongst larger audience all the participants were asked to write a Road Safety Message to participate in Lucky Draw in which our student of the college won a ‘helmet’ as a prize.
