Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a Talk on the topic “LEGAL AWARENESS: A TOOL FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMWENT” today.Ms.JagdaleNilambari Vijay, IPS, Senior Superintendent Police, Chandigarh, was the chief guest.Mr.RakeshPopli, Director Higher Education, Chandigarh administration was the Guest of Honour and Mr.AjayJagga, Senior Advocate was the keynote speaker.Prof. Rama Arora, Dean and Mr.Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Vice-Principal also graced the occasion.

The function was inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Principal and guests, followed by rendition of SaraswatiVandana by the Music (Vocal) students of the college.

Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college, welcomed the guests and highlighted the incessant endeavours of the college in pursuing the objective of empowerment of women. She congratulated the chief guest, Ms.JagdaleNilambari Vijay, IPS, for being the first woman SSP of U.T., Chandigarh and thanked Mr.RakeshPopli, DHE, Chandigarh administration for taking initiatives in the field of higher education and spreading awareness regarding the rights of women.

Mr.RakeshPopli in his address emphasised the importance of legal literacy for empowerment of women. He highlighted that Chandigarh has the highest Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) of women in the country and assured all possible support from his office in the field of higher education.

The keynote speaker Mr. Ajay Jaggaindicated that women empowerment can take place only with women. Addressing the girls he asked If not you than Who, if not now than when? Quoting from IPC and CrPC, he apprised the gathering regarding various legal rights, laws and latest amendments related with crime against women. Citing examples from Sanskrit scriptures and quoting judgements related to crime against women he remarked that a murderer kills the body while a rapist kills the soul.He also shared motivational videos inspiring the students to fight for their rights and emulate the role models.

In her Presidential remarks, Ms.JagdaleNilambari Vijay, IPS, Senior Superintendent Police, Chandigarh thanked and congratulated the organisers for taking such an initiative to create awareness on a globally pertinent issue. Identifying her role as a police officer, she reflected that the main concern being faced in the implementation is lack of reporting of the incident by the women victims. She stressed that women should not seek empowerment from the outer world as it lies within the women. She urged them not to ‘Shut-up’but to raise their voice. She motivated them to learn self-defence techniques so as to become self-reliant. Guiding about the contact numbers and other facilities being provided by Chandigarh Police, she assured prompt action in case of any mishap.
