24th Jan 2018: One-day Capacity Building Workshop on “Sustainable Development in India: Issues and Challenges”

Post Graduate Department of Economics of the P.G. Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh  organised a One-day Capacity Building Workshop on “Sustainable Development in India: Issues and Challenges” today.The Workshop was organised under the aegis of RUSA, Chandigarh Administration.The workshop witnessed immense response with a participation of 400 delegates, comprising students, research scholars and 100 faculty members of the host college and the other colleges of the city.

Prof. Amarjeet Singh, Professor of Eminence, Akal University, Talwandi Sabowas the Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof.Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college welcomed the Chief Guest and introduced the speakers to the audience. Prof. Rama Arora, Dean and Mr.Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Vice Principal of the college also graced the occasion. Dr.ShashiKant from the Department of Economics introduced the theme of the workshop.

In his Presidential remarks, Prof. Amarjeet Singhstated that there is a missing harmony in the strategy of economic development.Delivering the keynote address in the Inaugural session, Prof. Gurmail Singh, Vice Chancellor, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo deliberated upon the rising income and wealth inequalities and observed that they are a threat to harmony and sustainability in India.

In the 1st Technical Session Prof. Davinder Sharma addressed the audience on the topic ‘Learning from the Frog: the secrets of sustainable living’. The presentation was well received and evoked a lot of interest from the audience, especially students.The 2nd Technical Session was graced by Dr. Sukhpal Singh, Director General, Center for Research and Industrial Development (CRRID), Chandigarh and Professor for Management in Agriculture, Indian Institute of Management. Ahmadabad. The topic of his presentation was ‘Achieving sustainable and harmonious development in India: Issues and ways forward with special reference to rural sector’. The presentation highlighted major issues of Indian rural sector, including agricultural sector,and their implication for sustainable and harmonious development.

The three sessions were well received by the delegates and the dignitaries gave thought provoking presentations. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mrs.GurpreetKaur ,Head of the Economics Department of the college.
