An interdisciplinary training workshop cum lecture on “Health Care through Helpful Medicinal Plants” was organized by Post Graduate Department of Botany in Collaboration with Environment Society of PGGCG-11, Chandigarh on 28.11.2015 for teaching, non teaching staff and post graduate students of Botany. The lecture, aimed at creating health awareness was delivered by Dr. Madan Gulati, Senior Ayurvedic Consultant, Ex. Deputy Director (Ayurved), Dept. of AYUSH, Ex. Addl. CEO, Medicinal Plant Board, Chandigarh.

In his lecture, Dr. Gulati said that “Ayurveda is an ancient therapy which has been given to us as a gift by our rishi munis”. Ayu means life and veda means knowledge and thus ayurveda means how to lead a better life which is a combination of complete harmony of body, senses and mind he said. He talked about 23 medicinal plants and their health benefits.

During workshop in the Herbal Garden he demonstrated about various common medicinal plants and their parts used like use of Kasni can cure kidney failure, herb Arjun can help cardiac patients, Ashwagandha can treat insomnia, Akarakara can strengthen teeth while bakul can treat gum ailments. He also laid stress that several side effects of allopathic drugs have compelled patients to seek alternative medicine.

Dr. Gulati said the ayurvedic system laid emphasis on treating the diseased first and then the disease, while other systems of medicine had side effects. The holistic approach of the ayurvedic system had ensured certain positive effects, he added. Lecture proved to be an eye popping for the audience.
