On January 30, 2023, the Cultural Society of P.G. Government College for Girls Sector 11 Chandigarh, in collaboration with Nostalgia, the Alumni association of the college, organized a celebration of Basant Panchmi in the music department. The event featured a lecture cum demonstration on “The Significance of Saraswati Pooja on Basant Panchmi” by Prof. Dr. Pankajmala Sharma, a distinguished musicologist and musician who previously served as the Dean Faculty of Design and Fine Arts and HOD music Department at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The ceremony began with the lighting of a lamp and the offering of flowers to Maa Saraswati.
Dr. Sharma, who holds a doctorate degree in music (sitar) and possesses unparalleled command over the Vedas, shared her wisdom on the pearls of enlightenment found in our Vedic literature. She shed light on how different images of Maa Saraswati are associated with various references and reverences. Dr. Sharma also encouraged students to delve deeper into exploring the vedic hymns, chants, and mantras and composing them in different ragas and tunes. Dr. Vandana Tiwari, the Head of the Music Vocal department, expressed gratitude to Dr. Sharma for inspiring the students and imparting such valuable knowledge.
