Prakriti- The Environment Society of P.G.G.C.G-11 Chandigarh celebrated Akshay Urja Diwas on 22nd August, 2024 in the college. The function was sponsored by Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science andTechnology, Promotion Society (CREST). Various Inter college Competitions like Slogan Writing, Poster Making and Pot Painting Competitions on the theme “Impact of Akshay Urja in India” were held. About 110 students from 11 colleges of the Tricity registered for the various competitions.
The program started by welcoming the Chief Guest, Prof (Dr) Anita Kaushal, Principal of the College. In her address to the students and faculty she advocated the essence of renewable energy in the sectors of Bio-Energy, Wind, Hydro and Solar Energy. Highlighting the importance of energy resources which is the need of the hour, she appreciated the efforts of the society members and motivated them to carry on such activities which would give them opportunities to play a constructive role for the betterment of the society. She also congratulated the students and the prize winners for enthusiastically participating in various competitions and being a part of the valuable campaign.
Resource person of the day was Dr. Shilpi Chaudhary, from Department of Physics, Punjab Engineering College, Deemed to be University, Chandigarh. She talked about solar cells also known as photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight directly into electricity. They are made from semiconducting materials like silicon which release electrons when exposed to sunlight. These electrons flow through a circuit generating electricity. With the help of a short video and power point presentation she explained about types of solar cells that are used nowadays for producing electricity.
The function concluded with the prize distribution ceremony.
