GLOBUS

The Department of Geography of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised ‘GLOBUS’, a series of Inter-class competitions on 22-11-2018. The students showcased their creative potential and skills in various formats.

Power-point presentations made by the students on environment, climate and other geographical dimensions were very informative and thought-provoking. Maps displaying the demographic and topographic features in black and white, and in colour were appreciated by one and all. The students also presented diverse processes and phenomena in diagrammatic form which were very reflective and specific.Quiz for the audience was keenly contested and the questions were related to the core areas and aspects of Geography. The performance reflected that the students had a grasp on the fundamentals of the discipline.

In the cultural performances, folk dances of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh and Haryana were presented which were thoroughly applauded by the audience.

Kala Sangam-A Cultural Evening

Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised Kala Sangam-A Cultural Evening on 17-11-2018. First Lady Shrimati Alka Singh, wife of His Excellency Sh. V. P. Singh Badnore, Hon’ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion.  Sh. R.S. Brar, Director Higher Education, UT Administrationalso graced the occasion.

The evening started with lighting of the Ceremonial Lamp by the Chief Guestand other dignitaries. Welcoming the first lady, Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college,proudly stated the achievements of the college in academic and co-curricular domains. She highlighted that the college has been ranked as a pioneer institution in North India by all the major ranking agencies of the country. The excellent achievements of the students and faculty have been complemented by the progress that the institution has made, may it be in infrastructure or in academics and research.

Students showcased their talent by presenting music and dance items in the cultural evening. The presented items won accolades and prizes in the Zonal and Inter-zonal Youth and Heritage Festivals. It is noteworthy that the college won the Overall Trophy in the PU Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival for the sixth consecutive time this year.

Indian orchestra presented by the students was a vibrant synthesis of sitar, rikhiveena, banjo, dilruba, mandolin and many instruments, and was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. Haman haiishqmastaana, a sufi Group Bhajan of Kabir was a treat for the ears. Chirmi, an energetic group dance of Rajasthan presented by the students with great liveliness left the audience swerving on their feet.

Mimicry by Osheen was very entertaining and left everybody wondering on the exceptional imitation talent of the student. Group song bharatdeshakhandhai glorified the potential and achievements of the nation. Students also presented Luddi, the traditional Punjabi dance which made the atmosphere lively and enthusiastic.

Mime on the pertinent issue of mob lynching was very thought provoking and an eye-opener. It served the purpose of generating awareness about the social evil. Vandematram, a dance portraying the unity in diversity of India and signifying national integration was a colourfulshow of vibrantly dressed students representing the varied cultures of Indian states.

Addressing the students and faculty, the Chief Guest Shrimati Alka Singh applauded the brilliant performance and congratulated the presenters and their mentors.She commended the multidimensional feats of the college and felt assured that the institution will keep on adding feathers in its cap by many more academic and extra-curricular accomplishments.

BIZFEST an Inter-College Competition

The Commerce Department of P.G. Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised BIZFEST an Inter-college competitions on 15-11-2018. It comprises of various areas such as Business Quiz, Just a Minute, Ad-Mad Show, Poster-making etc.. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college by lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Mr. Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Dean and Prof. Nirupama Luthra, Vice-Principal also graced the occasion. Participants from various colleges of the city displayed their academic potential, creative skills and imaginative talent in the contests. Students also presented songs and self-composed poemswhich were highly applauded by the audience. Western Dance, solo dance and bhangra enthralled the audience.

An Inter-college Quiz on the theme IMPORTANCE OF UNITY DAY AND CONTRIBUTION OF SARDAR VALLABH BHAI PATEL

NSS units of  PG Govt. College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh in collaboration with Prashasnika, society of Departments of Public Administration and Political Science organised an Inter-college Quiz on the theme IMPORTANCE OF UNITY DAY AND CONTRIBUTION OF SARDAR VALLABH BHAI PATEL  on 25-10-2018.  The objective of the quiz was not only to test the knowledge of today’s generation on the theme but to also generate awareness about the significance of national unity and the role played by Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel in independence struggle and national integration.

Teams from nine colleges and institutions of the city participated in the competition.

Questions ranging from Quotes by Sardar Patel to quotes on unity of India were asked. The Question rounds on books written on, and monuments/institutions named after Sardar Patel were also a part of the quiz.  Knowledge about culture of India and Constitution of India was also tested.

High Energy Experiments – An overview

Under the dynamic leadership of Principal, Prof. Anita Kaushal, Physics Department of PGGCG-11, Chandigarh organized a talk on “High Energy Experiments – An overview” on 17-09-2018. The highlight of the talk was study of connection of past and future of universe through high energy physics experiments. Just a Minute contest (JAM) and Inter-Class Poster Making Competitionwas also held on this occasion. The students of B.Sc.(Medical, Non-Medical and Computer Science) enthusiastically participated in this event. The poster presentation by the students was a reflection of their knowledge, creativity and imagination which conveyed the theme of their posters very well.

Press release workshop on Hygiene Management

A Two day Capacity Building Workshop on the theme “Hygiene management among Adolescents” was organised in the Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh under the aegis of RUSA on 12th and 13th September 2018. The Workshop was conducted by a team of experts from Panjab University, Chandigarh. More than 80 students participated in the workshop.  The Inaugural session was chaired by Professor Nirupma Luthra, Vice Principal of the college and attended by several faculty members of the college.

In her inaugural address, Dr Navdeep Sharma, NSS Coordinator, Panjab University, Chandigarh described the importance of Hygiene amongst adolescents.  She urged the girls to shed the myths relating to Menstrual Hygiene and practise safe hygiene practices.

Dr Manjushree from UIAMS, PU, Chandigarh explained the biological processes and changes in the adolescents which need to be understood in the right perspective for the healthy body of the adolescents.

Dr Gaurav Gaur, Assistant Professor in Social Work from PU, Chandigarh conducted a session explaining how it is important for both the male as well female members of the society to understand the problems of the adolescents.

Dr Amritpal Kaur and Dr AnupamBahri from UILS, PU Chandigarh also acted as resource persons during the workshop.  They discussed at length about the problems faced by the adolescent girls and gave suggestions related to proper sanitary practices to be followed by them.

The experts screened several short movies and team building exercises leading to discussion on the topic.  The students thanked the Principal of the college for the organisation of the workshop.

Hindi-Diwas

Hindi Department of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh celebrated Hindi-Diwas Fortnight which concluded on 13-09-2018. Many competitions like Poetry-recitation, Poem-writing, Story-writing, Essay-writing,Declamation, Slogan-writing were organised to mark Hindi Day. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, a well-known scholar and Chairperson of Hindi Department, Panjab University, Chandigarh, presided over the function. In his Presidential remarks, Dr. Singh stressed on the nature and significance of Hindi language and highlighted its emerging role in the contemporary world. Dr. Singh gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions. Dr. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college, congratulated the prize winners and motivated the students to give an appropriate direction to their creative potential. Mr. Kanwar Iqbal, Dean and Dr. NirupamaLuthra, Vice-Principal of the college were also present on the occasion.

Welcome Party

The   seniors   of   the   post-graduate departments of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sec-11, Chandigarh, organized a Welcome party for the freshers on 12-09-2018. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college was the chief guest. Mr. Kanwar Iqbal Dean of the college and, Prof. Nirupma Luthra Vice-Principal also graced the occasion. The college has post-graduation in English, Economics, Dance, Music Vocal, Music Instrumental, Public Administration, Sociology, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Commerce, Fine Arts, Information Technology, Psychology and PGDCA.

Dazzling performances of the students enthralled the audience. The students danced on a medley of songs which was enjoyed thoroughly by the audience. Solo song performances were also highly applauded by one andall. Group dance and bhangra left the audience swerving on their feet. Students also presented a fusion of western and classical dance which captivated the gathering. Elegant ramp-walk by the Post graduate students of first year was a treat to the eyes. Their dignity and poise gathered huge appreciation.

Helmet Awareness Rally for Girls

The Traffic Awareness and Road Safety Society of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a Helmet Awareness Rally for girls in collaboration with Chandigarh Traffic Police, NSS units and Alumni Association of the college on 29-8-2018. Mrs. Nilambari Jagadale, IPS, SSP Chandigarh was the Chief Guest. Sh. Shashank Anand, IPS, SSP Security & Traffic also graced the occasion. In this unique initiative, the Chandigarh Traffic Police distributed helmets to the girl students to promote the culture of safe-driving. T-shirts were also gifted to the rallyists.

The police personnel of Chandigarh Traffic Police sensitised the students about the significance of wearing helmet while driving through meaningful songs. They also tested the knowledge of the students about traffic signs and road safety through a quiz. Police personnel highlighted the guidelines to be followed while driving and motivated the students to practice safe driving. Accident victims narrated their experiences and shared that they owed their lives to the helmets. Students of the college presented a group song on the theme “helmet pehnaao, betibachaao”, and also staged a skit showing the importance of observance of traffic rules and wearing of helmets.

Mrs. Nilambari Jagadale, IPS, SSP Chandigarh, Sh. Shashank Anand, IPS, SSP Security & Traffic and Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college flagged off the rally. A large number of students from girls’ colleges participated in the rally on two wheelers wearing helmets. The rally went through various sectors of the city to generate awareness about safe driving.

Addressing the gathering Mrs. Nilambari Jagadale, IPS, SSP Chandigarh stressed that observance of traffic rules ensures not only our own safety but also of others. Women of the city should come forward and set example before the society, especially the men folk, to wear helmet and follow traffic rules. Educating women about road safety would lead to education of entire family and cultivate safe driving habits in the society at large, she stressed.

Prof. Anita Kaushal applauded the enterprising efforts of Chandigarh Police, especially the Traffic Police, and assured that the students of the college would serve as agents of sensitising and creating awareness among residents of the city about the issues regarding road safety.

PRAKRITI- The Environment Society

PRAKRITI- The Environment Society of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11,Chandigarh celebrated Akshay Urja Diwas on 24-08-2018. The function was sponsored by Chandigarh Renewable Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST). Various Inter-college Competitions like Eco-rangoli, Poster Making and Face Painting on the theme “Impact of Akshay Urja in India” were held. About 100 students from 15 colleges of the Tricity registered for the competitions. A lecture cum presentation was given by Dr. Vasundhara Singh, Professor at Punjab Engineering College Chandigarh and also alumnus of the college. She spoke on solar energy as a renewable source for water treatment and solar cells. She also talked on the usage of titanium compounds on improving environmental quality.
