National Seminar on “Contemporary Aesthetics and Technology”

The Department of English and Centre for Research at Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh recently hosted a National Seminar titled “Contemporary Aesthetics and Technology” on February 22nd, 2023. The seminar was sponsored by College Development Council, PU, Chandigarh and featured an esteemed group of speakers and scholars. The Principal, Prof Anita Kaushal, gave the opening remarks and praised the organizers for choosing such a relevant topic. Prof Maninder Sidhu, Head of the Department, introduced the seminar’s theme and Prof Arjun Ghosh from IIT Delhi delivered the keynote address on “Multilingual Scholarship in the Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges in South Asia”.

 

The plenary session included a panel discussion moderated by Prof Sidhu, featuring creative thinkers and scholars such as Prof BN Goswamy, Prof Neelam Man Singh Chowdhry, Ms Neel Kamal Puri, and Mr Khushwant Singh. They discussed the impact of technology on visual arts, theatre, fiction, and aesthetic imagination. The seminar was well-attended by students and research scholars from various universities and colleges from the region and other parts of the country.

 

Faculty and scholars presented research papers on various ethical conundrums arising from the interface between art and technology in the technical sessions organized around new media, literary studies, digitization, films, iconography, and other aesthetic forms. These sessions were chaired by Prof Deepti Gupta, Dr Meenu Gupta, and Prof Praveen Sharda.

 

The seminar ended with a valedictory address by Prof Akshaya Kumar, Chairman of the Department of English and Cultural Studies, PU, Chandigarh, who highlighted aspects of emerging electronic literature. This was followed by an interactive session and a vote of thanks from Dr Tanuja Pathak. Overall, the seminar was a resounding success, offering a thought-provoking platform to explore the complex relationship between technology and aesthetics in contemporary times.

Sadak Suraksha Jeeva Raksha

Traffic Awareness and Road Safety Society under the aegis of IQAC in collaboration with Department of Public Administration held Power Point Presentations and Quiz Competition on 15th February 2023 for its members on the theme “Sadak Suraksha Jeeva Raksha”.

The programme started with the address by the Programme coordinator Dr. Cheena Gambhir who welcomed the Principal Prof.( Dr.) Anita Kaushal, Dean Mr. Ajay Kumar Sharma and Vice Principal Ms. Monica Vij. About 30 students from various streams participated in the competition and more than 200 students attended the function. The purpose was to sensitize and update awareness amongst the fellow students regarding the latest traffic rules, road signs, documentation and causes of fines and it also highlighted various traffic and road safety related issues.  The Principal gave the prizes to winners of Quiz and Presentation participants and encouraged the students that they must follow traffic rules to save their precious life. The rules are made for their protection of life and while driving they must always keep their driving documents with them.

Inter College IT Fest : TECHZEAL

TECH-ZEAL 2K23, an annual inter-college competitions event, was organised by the Department of Computer Applications, Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh on February 10, 2023. The event was inaugurated by the Principal, Prof. Anita Kaushal, along with the Dean, Mr. Ajay Kumar Sharma, and Ms. Monika Sikka, through lighting a ceremonial lamp. With more than 150 participants from 13 colleges in the region, the campus was buzzing with energy throughout the day.

The competitions included “SHOW CASE,” a movie-making contest, “DANCEPLUS,” a dance competition, “TREASURE HUNT,” an outdoor adventure game that tested presence of mind and physical agility, “MIND EXPLORER- IT QUIZ,” which tested programming skills through problem solving, critical analysis, and quick thinking, “WEB-CREATEX,” a web designing contest, and “KOD-HAK,” a debugging competition. The event also featured “THE MASK-Face Painting,” where participants painted themes related to Digital India, and “BEST OUT’A WASTE,” where e-waste materials were assembled creatively and innovatively.

Prof. Anita Kaushal distributed prizes to the winners and commended the Department of Computer Applications for organizing the event. She encouraged students to excel in computer applications and carve a niche for themselves in the modern competitive world, stating that IT is essential and plays a vital role in many sectors. Prof. Kaushal noted that events like Tech Zeal act as a source of destressing and refreshing for students amidst their strenuous academic schedules, and the technical skills learned from such events will undoubtedly help them succeed in their chosen career paths.

Music Instrumental- Research Scholar Presentation Series

The Research centre in Music Instrumental of Post Graduate Government College for Girls Sector 11, Chandigarh organised presentation of Ph.D Research Scholar. In this series of research presentation Part – I was presented by Amandeep Kaur on the topic Baba Bulie Shah Ji Ka Jeevan Evam Unke Dawara Rachit Parsidh Sufi Kalam on 31.01.2023.

Celebration of Basant Panchmi

On January 30, 2023, the Cultural Society of P.G. Government College for Girls Sector 11 Chandigarh, in collaboration with Nostalgia, the Alumni association of the college, organized a celebration of Basant Panchmi in the music department. The event featured a lecture cum demonstration on “The Significance of Saraswati Pooja on Basant Panchmi” by Prof. Dr. Pankajmala Sharma, a distinguished musicologist and musician who previously served as the Dean Faculty of Design and Fine Arts and HOD music Department at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The ceremony began with the lighting of a lamp and the offering of flowers to Maa Saraswati.

Dr. Sharma, who holds a doctorate degree in music (sitar) and possesses unparalleled command over the Vedas, shared her wisdom on the pearls of enlightenment found in our Vedic literature. She shed light on how different images of Maa Saraswati are associated with various references and reverences. Dr. Sharma also encouraged students to delve deeper into exploring the vedic hymns, chants, and mantras and composing them in different ragas and tunes. Dr. Vandana Tiwari, the Head of the Music Vocal department, expressed gratitude to Dr. Sharma for inspiring the students and imparting such valuable knowledge.

74th Republic Day Celebration

74th Republic Day was celebrated in Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh today. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college unfurled the National Tricolour. Ms. Monika Sikka, Vice-Principal, faculty members and students attended the ceremony.
The students of Music Vocal Department rendered Patriotic songs that made the atmosphere highly nationalistic. Speeches by the students invoked the spirit of nationalism amongst all.
Addressing the students, Principal, Prof. Anita Kaushal congratulated the students and staff on this auspicious occasion. She highlighted that the constitution of India is the longest written document that defines the responsibilities and powers of three pillars of democracy.
She advised the students that as we have inherited a free nation, with a world of opportunities, it becomes our duty to be the torch bearers of values of integrity, patriotism and understand the true sense of freedom. She cautioned that the youth of the nation should not fall prey to the vices like drugs, communal hatred, cyber crime etc. She encouraged the students to strive to become sensitive, global citizens and provide ethical and intellectual leadership in every sphere of human endeavour.

 

National Voters Day Celebration

Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh and Electoral Literacy Club of the college under the able guidance of Principal Prof. (Dr) Anita Kaushal along with the faculty members and Students of various undergraduate and postgraduate classes celebrated National Voters Day on the theme “Nothing like voting. I will vote for sure”. A Pledge was taken along with the song in the background “Mai Bharat hoon…..”. The college hosted a plethora of activities namely, Poster making; Slogan Writing and Quiz Competition at various levels. More than 200 students participated in the various activities with much vigour and enthusiasm.

One Day Seminar on “Invention & Innovation and Research Discovery in Chemistry”

Post Graduate Department of Chemistry in collaboration with Prakriti- Environment society of the college organized one day Seminar on “Invention & Innovation and Research Discovery in Chemistry”. Prof. Sanjay Mandal, Faculty Member in Department of Chemical Sciences at IISER, Mohali was the guest speaker. Prof Mandal has more than 30 years of experience out of which he spent over 20 years in USA including earning his Ph.D in Chemistry under the guidance of legendary Professor F. Albert Cotton , Texas. His research interests span across several sub fields of Chemistry with special emphasis on Multifunctional nanomaterials, Crystal Engineering, Organometallic Chemistry and X-Ray Crystallography. About 50 students & 6 faculty members from MSc participated in the seminar. The program started with welcome address by Dr. Sadhna Verma, HOD of chemistry department. Opening remarks and introduction of the program was given by Dr . Veenita Anand.
Addressing the students, Prof Mandal, apprised them that invention is something which is new in this world which is not pre existing in this world while innovation is an introduction of new and better solution that meets new requirement of existing market needs. It may be further defined as betterment in something already existing. Overall the session proved very fruitful for both staff and students. Madam Principal Prof. (Dr.) Anita Kaushal applauded the efforts of Chemistry Department and motivated them to organise such events in the future

 

World AIDS Day Observed

PGGCG-11, Chandigarh organised Candle Lighting Programme with a theme “Rock the Ribbon” in collaboration with RED Ribbon Society and National Service Scheme (NSS) marking the World Aids Day in the college campus on 1st December, 2022. Dr. Anurita Sharma, Convenor, Red Ribbon Society, Dr. Ritu Sekhri, NSS Program Officer coordinated the programme. 150 NSS Volunteers also contributed to make the programme successful.

World Aids Day, designated on 1st December every year since 1988 is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Activities like Nukkad Natak, Mass Rally and Candle lighting were organised. The students were sensitized about the progress in ending Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and progress towards attaining universal health to achieve an AIDS-free generation. Principal, Prof. (Dr) Anita Kaushal, lauded the efforts of the organizers and students for raising awareness against HIV infection.

Cultural Evening

Nostalgia, the Alumni Association of the college organized a cultural evening for the Alumnae which witnessed a huge participation of old students across generations. More than 150 former students from different walks of life attended the meet. They recalled their stay in the college, and felt proud to be associated with their alma mater even after so many years.

The show started with the traditional lighting of the lamp followed by a kaleidoscope of cultural extravaganza. Students showcased their talent by presenting music and dance items. The presented items have won accolades and prizes in the Zonal and Inter-zonal Youth and Heritage Festivals. It is noteworthy that the college won the Overall Trophy in the PU Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival for the Ninth consecutive time this year and was adjudged 2nd Runner-up in the recently concluded Inter-Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival at Mukerian.

Indian orchestra presented by the students was a vibrant synthesis of Sitar, Rikhi Veena, Banjo, Dilruba, Mandolin and many instruments, and was thoroughly enjoyed by one and all. Group Bhajan was a treat for the ears. An energetic Rajasthani group dance left the audience swerving on their feet.

Gazal, a soulful rendition of emotions, and the group song was highly applauded. Students also presented Luddi, the traditional Punjabi dance which made the atmosphere lively and enthusiastic. A colourful dance of vibrantly dressed students from north-eastern states portrayed the rich cultural heritage of India. Mimicry and Bhaand performances raised a lot of laughter.

Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college and herself an alumna, interacted with the alumnae and expressed pleasure that they still cherished the memories of the institution so fondly.
