REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

The staff and students of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh celebrated Republic Day with gaiety and fervour on 26-01-2020. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college unfurled the national flag.

Students while honouring the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect, expressed their views on the significance of freedom in the contemporary context and the progress of India during the last seven decades. They enumerated the accomplishments of the country in science, technology, defence, space research, medicine, literature, trade and many other fields.

Group and solo songs by the students of Music Department made the atmosphere nationalistic. Group dance by the students of Dance Department stirred a spirit of patriotism.

Addressing the students on this occasion Principal, Prof. Anita Kaushal emphasised that the Indian constitution is a living document and adapts to the changing needs of the hour. She stressed that besides being the largest democracy, its spirit is followed in thought, word and deed. She motivated the students to keep themselves updated and resolve to fight visible and invisible negative forces to enable gain new heights of glory. She encouraged the gathering to not only enjoy the rights but also pay due regard to the fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution.

Education and Pedagogy in the Times of Digital Humanities

A Seven Days Faculty Development Programme on the theme “Education and Pedagogy in the Times of Digital Humanities” was inaugurated in Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh on 09-01-2020. The Programme is being organised by IQAC, Department of Philosophy and Department of Psychology of the college in association with Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), Panjab University, Chandigarh under the aegis of RUSA, UT Chandigarh. More than 40 delegates comprising faculty members of diverse disciplines from various educational institutions of the city are participating. The objective of the programme is to engage participants in creative dialogue in understanding and reflecting on the idea of digital humanities and its impact on education and pedagogy in contemporary times.  It will serve as a platform to provide greater opportunity to the teachers to engage in a more creative pedagogy, enhance their teaching and learning skills; and subsequently help the students in improving their performance.

WORLD PHILOSOPHY DAY

The Philosophy Department of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh celebrated World Philosophy Day in collaboration with Departments of Sanskrit, French and Sociology on 21-11-2019. Dr. Lallan S. Baghel, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the key-note address. Presenting his views on “Relevance of Socrates’ and Gandhi’s Public Philosophy”, Dr. Baghel stressed on their discourse on “truth” and the critical thinking they were attributed with. He observed that though these two were from different socio-cultural backgrounds, their stream of thinking and logic was aimed at public welfare. This was followed by an Interactive Session wherein the faculty members, research scholars and students raised issues of pertinence in the contemporary context.

A Poster-making Contest on the theme “Women Philosophers in History and Present” was a kaleidoscope of the creative potential of the students. A Paper-writing Competition on “Gandhi and his ideas: Contemporary Relevance” displayed the imaginative talent of the students and the deep thinking they have about Gandhi’s ideals. A Declamation Competition on the theme “What is Education” was a showcase of the vivid imagination and perception of today’s generation.

Kala Sangam

Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised Kala Sangam-A Cultural Evening on 14-11-2019. Mrs. Lippi Parida, wife of Sh. Manoj Kumar Parida, Advisor to the Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mrs. Gagandeep Kaur Brar, Divisional Town Planner, Chandigarh Administration and wife of Sh. Rubinderjit Singh Brar, Director Higher Education, Chandigarh Administration also graced the occasion.

The evening started with lighting of the Ceremonial Lamp by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries. Welcoming the Chief guest, Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college, proudly stated the achievements of the college in academic and co-curricular domains. She highlighted that the college has been ranked as a pioneer institution in North India by all the major ranking agencies of the country. The excellent achievements of the students and faculty have been complemented by the progress that the institution has made, may it be in co-curricular, or in academics and research. Principal Prof. Kaushal stressed that the college aims at holistic development of the students and institutes all such measures that can make them self-reliant amabassadors of social transformation. She also welcomed the alumnae who were a part of the occasion. Nostalgia, the Alumni Association of the college organised the meet which witnessed a huge participation of old students across generations. More than 250 ex-students attended the meet. They recalled their stay in the college, and felt proud to be associated with their alma mater even after so many years.

Kala Sangam was a kaleidoscope of unity in diversity of India and signified the spirit of national integration of our multi-cultural nation. Students showcased their talent by presenting music and dance items in the cultural evening. The presented items have won accolades and prizes in the Zonal and Inter-zonal Youth and Heritage Festivals. It is noteworthy that the college won the Overall Trophy in the PU Zonal Youth and Heritage Festival for the seventh consecutive time this year.

Needonomics for Human Development in India

Post Graduate Department of Economics of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organised a Talk/Interactive Session on Needonomics for Human Development in India on 06-11-2019. Professor M.M. Goel former Vice Chancellor Jagan Nath University, who is a known spiritual economist from Kurukshetra , was the resource person for the expert talk. Prof (Dr) Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college welcomed Prof. M.M. Goel. The Principal emphasised the importance of human development in India in the context of large population resources.

Making his presentation, Prof. Goel emphasised that  “Recession  as  ‘horror-scope’  of  any  economy  like  India  calls  for  spiritually guided materialism (SGM) Strategy which is  capable of removing  all kinds of fear  (false  evidences appearing  real).  Economy based on SGM strategy does not require predictions (astrological or data based) for existence and excellence without worries of wars as not windblown of recession.” Prof. Goel opined that recession in the global economy including India is a reality to be accepted by the stakeholders with proper diagnosis by the economists for creating conducive working environment. Economy can be people friendly and socially beneficial only if undertaken in accordance with NAW (Need, Affordability and Worth) approach of the goods and services .To  fix  the  existing  economic  mess  ,  we  have  to  understand,  analyse,  interpret  and  adopt ‘Needonomics’  (economics of needs) which is  nonviolent, spiritual  and ethical in  nature. Needonomics is  the  sensible  idea  of  India  in  tune  with 17  Sustainable  Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 for every economy of the world, he believes. It  is  believed  by  Professor  Goel  that  the  problems  including  violence,  terrorism,  exploitation  and corruption of all kinds are caused by ‘Greedonomics’ (economics of greed) and can be reduced if not removed by ‘Needonomics’.

Punjabi Sahit Sabha

The ‘Punjabi Sahit Sabha’, society of Department of Punjabi of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh commemorated the 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji by organising a series of events on 06-11-2019. As a part of the celebration, an Inter-college Poetry Recitation Competition was held today. More than twenty students from eight colleges of the city participated in the competition. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college and Chief-guest of the event welcomed the guests, participants and faculty members from other institutions.

 

Shri Ram Arsh, Sh. Manmohan Singh Daun and Smt. Daljit Kaur Daun, all eminent poets were the judges on the occasion. The contestants recited the poems on the theme of the teachings, values and philosophy of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The creative potential and the grasp of the students on the life and teachings of Sri Guru Nanak was greatly appreciated by the audience.

 

Earlier during the week quiz, poetry, story, slogan and essay-writing Intra-college competitions were organised by the Punjabi Department. Students from under-graduate and post-graduate classes of all the streams showcased their imaginative potential and artistic skills portraying the life, teachings and philosophy of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.

 

Highlighting the contribution of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, Prof. Anita Kaushal emphasised that the preachings of the Guru are relevant in the contemporary context as they facilitate spiritual upliftment; enhance social harmony and brotherhood and are the key to social equality.

VOCAL RECITAL

The Cultural Society of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh in collaboration with Indian Council for Cultural Relations organised a Vocal Recital on 30-10-2019. Shri Kashish Mittal, a renowned artist of Agra gharaana presented the recital on the occasion. Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college inaugurated the function and welcomed the exponent and the accompanists. She observed that the rendition will serve as a guiding force for the music lovers and students of Music Department. It is noteworthy that the college has post graduate departments in Music Vocal, Music Instrumental and Dance, and a research centre approved by the Panjab University for guiding doctorate scholars. Mr. Kanwar Iqbal, Dean of the college and Convener of the Cultural Society, Ms. Nalini Singhal, Regional Director, ICCR and Pandit Yashpal Sagun Piya, an eminent musician and other dignitaries from music faculty were also present on the occasion.

Kashish Mittal began the concert with raga gurjari todi followed by a Madhya lay bandish and taraana in raag shudhh saarang. He mesmerised the audience with his soothing aalaap electrifying taans, taaiyaari and the authentic improvisation style of Agra gharaana. He was accompanied by Shri Jaydev on tabla, Sh. Manish Kumar on harmonium and Ms. Sonalika Verma and Ms. Nishu Sharma on taanpura.

Anti Cracker Awareness Campaign

“PRAKRITI” The Environment Society of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh in collaboration with NSS organized an Awareness Campaign on safe, pollution free and cracker-free DIWALI on 24-10-2019. A series of activities were organized on the occasion.

About 25 students of PRAKRITI and NSS presented two Nukkad nataks depicting hazards of bursting crackers, the effect of crackers on old people and children, increase in the noise-pollution and air-pollution. The aim was to sensitize the students not to burst crackers, but light diyas and observe a green and eco-friendly Diwali.

Prof. Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college administered pledge to the faculty members, students and the non-teaching staff to protect the environment by not bursting crackers and further spread this message to one and all. She emphasized the importance of celebrating on Eco-friendly Deepawali and thereby reducing air and noise pollution.

On this occasion, a Human Chain was formed and a rally of about 100 students and 15 faculty members was also organized. The rally was flagged off by Principal Prof. Anita Kaushal, Dean Mr. Kanwar Iqbal and Vice Principal Dr. Anita Khosla. The objective of the rally was to sensitize the community on the hazards of air-pollution and noise-pollution and make them aware of the significance of environment conservation.

Seven Days NSS Camp

The Valedictory function of NSS seven days Day/Night camp was organized in Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh on 04-10-2019. The camp was organized from 28th, Sept. 2019 to 4th Oct. 2019. More than 150 volunteers participated in the camp. A cultural programme was organized during the occasion. The theme of the camp was “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Jal Shakti Abhiyan”.

Principal Prof. Anita Kaushal, who was the chief guest for the valedictory function, motivated the students to work in harmony for community service and gave insights to save water. She applauded the volunteers for their untiring efforts throughout the camp.

The volunteers of post-graduate departments of Public Administration and Botany made a presentation to highlight the significance of Jal Shakti Abhiyan which served as an eye-opener for the campers. During the camp, the volunteers visited the adopted village Khudda Jassu. Swachhta rallies, nukkad nataks and door to door interaction were carried out to make the villagers aware about the importance of hygiene and water conservation in the village. Meanwhile, in the college, experts delivered talks on various issues like Menstrual Hygiene, water conservation etc. Lectures on ‘Gandhian way of living’ were delivered on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary. Sessions on Yoga for girls were also organized.

BCA FRESHERS

The senior students of the PG Department of Computer Applications of Post Graduate Govt. College for Girls, Sector-11, Chandigarh organized Freshers’ Party to welcome BCA-1st year students on 19-09-2019. Prof. (Dr.) Anita Kaushal, Principal of the college was the Chief Guest, and Mr. Kanwar Iqbal Singh, Dean and Dr. Anita Khosla, Vice-Principal of the college also graced the occasion.

The senior students presented a kaleidoscope of events ranging from songs, dances, medleys, choreography and modeling. The dances performed on a medley of foot-tapping numbers had the audience swerving on their feet. The Fashion cum Modeling, showcased by the Freshers enthralled one and all.

Principal Prof. Dr. Anita Kaushal applauded for the aesthetic sense of the new generation and advised them to work hard, stay focused and committed to the course they have chosen for their career.
